NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team extended their win streak to a program record 14 as they defeated Randolph-Macon 21-8.
Ashton Marshall scored five to lead the Captains.
The Captains jumped out to a five goal lead in just under seven minutes with
Lauren King scoring two and
Rachel Tomlinson handing out two assists. Randolph-Macon scored their only goal of the half at the 23:00 minute mark off a free position shot.
CNU continued to pour on the goals for the remainder of the half netting six for a 10-1 score at the break.
The momentum continued for CNU as they put four more on the board to go up by 14 goals before the Yellow Jackets snuck in an unassisted goal.
The Captains went on another four-goal run to go up 19-2 with 12:36 remaining in the game. Late substitutions for the Captains allowed the Yellow Jackets to gain momentum scoring six goals in the last 11 minutes of contest.
The Captains outshot the Yellow Jackets 33 to 18 and had 16 ground balls to Randolph-Macon's nine. The Captains also won 20 of 31 draw controls.
Behind Marshall's five goals was King with four and
Kelly Lane and
Becca Geist with three each. Tomlinson scored two goals, had three assists, won four draw controls and led the team with three caused turnovers.
Hannah Wilkerson picked up her 14th win collecting six saves and allowing only three goals.
Today's contest was the first annual Debbie Cale Classic with the purpose of raising awareness, raising money, and promoting education of ovarian cancer. The team partnered with the Sigma Alpha Omega Sorority and the CNU field hockey team who helped advertise the game and hold a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds from the event went to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.
The Captains travel to Fredericksburg, Va. on Thursday to take on Mary Washington at 4:00pm.
