BURLINGTON, N.C. -- With a 3-0 shutout over seventh-seeded Averett University, the 10th ranked Christopher Newport Captains (32-7) will advance to the championship game for the fourth time in the last five years. Averett (21-21) outhit the Captains 8-6, but CNU got more timely swings with an RBI double and two sacrifice flies.

CNU staked junior pitcher Whitney Haller to a lead in the first inning, and the USA South Pitcher of the Year made it stick with a complete game shutout. She scattered eight hits with four strikeouts without issuing a free pass in the win. Haller improved to 13-3 on the season and lowered her ERA to 1.50 with the effort.

The Captains runs came after an error in the first allowed rookie Sabrina Hill to drive in a run with a double to right center field. In the fifth and sixth innings, CNU tacked on runs with a pair of sac flies. Junior Chelsea Mitchell and senior Jordan Beadles connected with the RBI flyouts.

Freshman Kristen Olsen was 2-3 with a run scored for CNU, while Kelley Foate was 1-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Averett got eight hits from seven different players, led by a 2-4 day by Morgan Jones.

The Captains will take on the winner of the consolation final, set for 10:00 am on Sunday between 3rd-seeded Ferrum College and Averett. First pitch for the championship game is set for 1:00 pm.
