BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Top-seeded Christopher Newport posted a 7-1 softball victory over 9th-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan in Friday afternoon's USA South Tournament action at Springwood Park. The Captains (30-7) advance to play 5th-seeded Greensboro on Saturday at Noon, while the Bishops (17-19) open play tomorrow at 10:00 am versus the winner of Mary Baldwin/Methodist.

The win marks the sixth straight 30-win campaign for the Captains, and 14th in program history.

Wesleyan jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Paige Pritchett singled home Carly Creef with the game's first run. USA South Pitcher of the Year Whitney Haller proceeded to get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam with a strikeout and lineout to end the inning.

The Captains answered in the bottom half, with a three-run homer from senior Jen Falin, to go up 3-1. CNU added a pair of unearned runs in the second when an inning-ending pop-up was lost in the sun. USA South Player and Rookie of the Year Sabrina Hill was credited with the two RBI.

Haller (12-3) made the early advantage stand up in a complete-game performance, scattering just five hits over Wesleyan's next six at-bats to secure the win. NCWC freshman Kelsi Bailey (6-11) suffered the loss in the circle, giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits over six complete.

Offensively, the Bishops stranded 11 runners in the game to the Captains' four. Wesleyan's Pritchett and Mu aria Seay finished with two rips apiece, while CNU had six different players tally hits.
