NEWPORT NEWS -- Christopher Newport's women's tennis team celebrated its only senior for its last regular-season match, then breezed to a 9-0 home victory over Virginia Wesleyan.
The Marlins (3-12) only had five players available, so they defaulted at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
In the seven contested matches, CNU (12-6) won 76 of the 80 games played.
Sarah Stafford, the honored senior, teamed with junior
Kim Morrissett -- who has been her teammate since their days at James River High in Chesterfield County -- for an 8-0 win at No. 1.
Marion Gloor and
Jodi Noland, the Captains' all-lefty combination, won 8-1at the second position.
In singles,
Angie Menendez was scheduled to play the sixth spot but received a default triumph. Stafford, Morrissett, Gloor, Noland and Melisande (Millie) Downs rolled to victories.
CNU now will prepare for this weekend's USA South tournament at the Burlington Tennis Center in North Carolina.
The Captains, seeded fourth, will take on No. 5 Greensboro at 9 a.m. Friday.
If CNU can repeat its regular-season triumph over the Pride, the Captains will play a semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday, likely against top-seeded Meredith.
Meredith beat N.C. Wesleyan, which beat defending champion Methodist, which beat Meredith. Since all three of those teams won every other conference match, a random drawing was needed to determine the highest three seeds.
N.C. Wesleyan drew the No. 2 slot and Methodist the No. 3, so they are likely to meet in the other semifinal.
