NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A four-goal third period gave the Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team the lead they needed to defeat St. Vincent College 9-6 on Captains Field today. The win improves the Captains to 2-2 on the season while dropping St. Vincent to 1-2.
The Captains and Bearcats battled back and forth for the first two periods of play with the score an even 3-3 at halftime.
John Glaser scored at the eight minute mark giving the Captains the lead in the first period. With just nine seconds left on the clock St. Vincent's got on the board with a goal from Bryce Pasquariello.
Billy Crist and
Kyle Pasta both scored in the second period with a St. Vincent goal squeezed between for a 3-2 score with 2:55 on the clock. But just like the first period the Bearcats scored with nine seconds left in the period to even score.
The Captains took control of the game in the third period scoring four unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead. And just like the previous two periods the Bearcats were able to sneak in a goal as time was winding down to pull within three.
The two teams traded goals in the fourth period for a 9-6 final score.
Glaser led the Captains with three goals and
Kyle Pasta netted two. Also scoring were
Jake Myers,
Billy Crist,
Rob Koster and
John Thompson.
Ari Elgort won 15 of 20 faceoffs taken and picked up six groundballs to lead the Captains. Defenders
Alex Elliott and
Zakary Burkhard had three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper
Andy McGregor made 10 saves while only allowing six goals.
The Captains outshot the Bearcats 42 to 26 and also led with 23 groundballs to St. Vincent's 11.
The Captains return to action on Saturday, March 7, as they take on Emmanuel College in Myrtle Beach, S.C. at 1:00pm.
