Nationally Ranked Softball Showdown With Salisbury at 2pm

SALISBURY, Md. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport University Captains (3-3) makes it's first return trip to the field they won the 2011 NCAA Regional Championship and its subsequent bid to the National Championship today, as the team travels to Salisbury University in Maryland for a doubleheader showdown. The Sea Gulls are ranked seventh in the nation and are off to a 5-1 start overall this season.

Last year, in the Regional Championship, the Captains blew past the Sea Gulls, winning the title with a convincing 19-3 win on Salisbury's home field. It was the second straight win in as many days, and the fourth of the year against Salisbury. The two teams matched up an uncharacteristic five times in one season, with CNU taking four wins and losing the fifth in extra innings by one run.

This season, CNU has been led by sophomore outfielder Kristina McLaughlin and junior catcher Chelsea Mitchell. Both players are hitting .450 through the first six games; McLaughlin has two home runs and a team-best 10 RBI, while Mitchell has scored seven runs and has two stolen bases. Rookie Sabrina Hill and senior Jen Falin each have also blasted two home runs so far this season.

Salisbury's arms lead the way in 2012, specifically senior Erika Brittingham. She is 4-1 to start the season with an 0.56 ERA, striking out 34 in 25 innings of work. Rachel Johnson and Kathryn Larson are also dishing sub-3.00 ERA's so far this season. The offense is also strong, averaging five runs a game with a team batting average of over .450. Michelle Gravdahl is hitting .375 with three home runs and eight RBI in the young season.

The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm. Live Stats and Live Video will be available.
