GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains improved to 22-6 overall toady, 10-2 in the USA South, when they swept the Greensboro Pride on the road in a conference doubleheader. CNU won game one, 8-3, and then took game two, 1-0, behind a dominant pitching performance from junior Krista Townsend.

Townsend picked up her first complete game shutout of the season in game two, striking out seven in the victory. The CNU junior was staked to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and she made it stick as she held the Pride to just five hits and one walk, improving to 8-1 overall this season.

The run scored came after a pair of rookies hit a pair of doubles for CNU. Third baseman Kristen Olsen hit a one-out double to center field and pinch runner Jordan Beadles came around to score when freshman first baseman Sabrina Hill also drove a double to the center field wall.

Hannah Pennell pitched well for the Pride, holding the Captains to just four hits, just two after the opening frame, and striking out seven. She would take the loss, though, falling to 2-7 after Townsend matched her pitch for pitch.

In the earlier game, junior Melanie Hazelwood got the start and went six strong innings, allowing three unearned runs.

The Captains offense jumped on starter Kelsey Sanfilippo, scoring two runs in the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. Senior Jen Falin and rookie Rachel Houff each had RBI walks in the first inning. In the second, Hill smacked her eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot scoring sophomore Kelley Foate.

CNU added two more in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 advantage headed into the bottom half, where Greensboro picked up a pair of their own. Falin helped CNU build the lead back to five with a solo home run to lead off the seventh, while Felicia Price added an RBI double later in the inning.

CNU called on Whitney Haller to finish out the game, pitching a clean seventh inning and ensuring Hazelwood the win. Hazelwood improves to 5-1 this season after scattering six hits and allowing one walk in six innings of work.

Hill led the way for CNU offensively, driving in three runs in the two games including the two-run home run.

The Captains return to action on Monday, travelling to Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader at 2:00 pm.
