FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Mary Washington snapped the Captains' nine-game winning streak, but CNU bounced back to start a new one in a doubleheader split on the road today, improving to 20-6 overall. The Eagles (13-10) won the first game, 3-2, and the Captains ran away with a 9-3 victory in the second.

CNU took an early lead in the first game, when junior catcher Chelsea Mitchell picked up a sacrifice fly and scored leadoff hitter Kelley Foate, putting the Captains up 1-0.

A lead-off solo home run in the top of the fourth from senior Jen Falin gave the Captains a 2-0 lead, but the Eagles responded with a three-run inning in the bottom half. Bireet Chitty singled to lead off, followed by a double from Brandee Adams. A single from Kerry Busby plated the first run, and a double from senior Morgan Lamon put Mary Washington up, 3-2.

The Captains were unable to get even despite a perfect inning of relief from Krista Townsend and suffered the game one setback. Whitney Haller earned the loss, after pitching five innings and picking up six strikeouts.

Junior Melanie Hazelwood got the start pitching for CNU in the second game, and the Eagles jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead against the right-hander. Aided by an error in the inning, Hazelwood gave up three unearned runs to the home team.

This time, though, the Captains offense would come-from-behind in a big way and Hazelwood settled in for a complete game victory. She tossed all seven innings and gave up just four hits after the first inning, striking out six in the game.

The CNU offense evened the score with one run in the second and two in the third, and then caught fire with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. In the big inning, the Captains got a two-RBI single from rookie Kristen Olsen, an RBI groundout from freshman Sabrina Hill and RBI singles from Mitchell and senior Felicia Price.

Mitchell's hit was the third in the game for the junior catcher , as she capped a 3-for-5 performance with two runs scored and an RBI. Foate also had a 3-for-5 game two with two runs and an RBI, while sophomore Candice Zollars was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Captains picked up their 22nd straight 20-win season with the victory. CNU will now travel to Greensboro College this weekend for a USA South doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 at 2:00 pm.
