LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport picked up wins number 18 and 19 today after sweeping the Lynchburg College Hornets (10-12) on the road. The 15th-ranked Captains (19-5) have won nine straight after winning game one, 7-2, and the encore, 8-0 in five innings. Junior catcher
Chelsea Mitchell had five hits to lead the way while rookies
Kristen Olsen and
Rachel Houff each blasted three-run home runs on the day.
Olsen's homer was the exclamation point on a big second inning in game one that put CNU up early, 5-0. The Captains loaded the bases with the first three batters of the inning with a walk and a pair of singles, followed by an RBI hit-by-pitch from senior
Felicia Price. An RBI groundout from
Kelley Foate then set up the three-run blast from Olsen, capping the five-run frame.
The Hornets picked up one against CNU starter
Krista Townsend in the bottom half, but CNU cruised to a 7-2 win from there. Senior
Jen Falin had an RBI single in the fifth and freshman
Sabrina Hill doubled down the left field line for an RBI in the top of the seventh to account for the remaining runs.
Townsend picked up her fifth win of the season with the complete game, scattering eight hits and giving up just one earned run while striking out five. Mitchell was 3-for-4 with a run scored while Hill and Olsen were each 2-for-4.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Captains called on
Melanie Hazelwood to start. She also pitched a complete game, shutting out Lynchburg for six innings while giving up just five hits. Hazelwood improved to 3-1 this season while dropping her ERA to a paltry 2.19.
Offensively, the Captains jumped out to another big lead early, scoring six runs after three innings. Rookie
Rachel Houff and Foate each plated a run in the second inning with singles, and the Captains tacked on four more in the top of the third. Houff belted her three-run shot to highlight the inning after Falin had singled in a run earlier.
CNU closed out the win courtesy of the eight-run rule with two more in the top of the sixth inning and Hazelwood pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half.
The Captains improve to 19-5 overall this season with a nine-game winning streak that will next be put on the line on Thursday as the team travels to Mary Washington to make up a rain-postponed doubleheader from earlier in the year. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
