NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University softball team swept a pair of USA South Athletic Conference games Monday afternoon. CNU beat Methodist by scores of 8-0 and 6-0 as
Elizabeth Holte and
Whitney Haller threw back to back shutouts.
CNU honored its four senior players before the games as
Jen Falin,
Felicia Price,
Maggie Farris and
Jordan Beadles were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the program.
Methodist entered the twin bill as the top team in the conference with an 8-0 USA South record. The two CNU wins pull the Captains even with the Monarchs at 8-2 in the standings.
Junior
Elizabeth Holte threw shutout ball in Game 1 for the Captains as CNU cruised to an 8-0 win. The game was stopped in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule. Holte improved to 4-1 on the season by allowing just two hits. Holte was second in season ERA in the USA South at 1.20 heading into Monday's games.
Freshman
Kristen Olsen reached base in all four at bats in the opener with a single, double, and two walks. She drove in three runs. Another freshman,
Sabrina Hill, plated two runs with a second inning single. Senior
Felicia Price and sophomore
Kristina McLaughlin each had two hits for CNU.
In the nightcap, junior
Whitney Haller tossed a complete game shutout as the Captains prevailed, 6-0. Haller allowed four hits in the first three innings and then shut down the Monarchs over the last four frames. Haller retired the last 10 batters she faced and struck out two. Haller improved her record to 7-2 for the season.
Christopher Newport scored three runs in the third, a single run in the fifth, and then added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Senior
Jen Falin had two hits and knocked in two runs in the second game. Junior
Chelsea Mitchell had three hits in the nightcap, a single, double, and triple and scored three times. Mitchell, who came into the doubleheader leading the USA South in RBI's, knocked in her 28th run of the season in the second game.
Sophomore
Kristina McLaughlin had two more hits in game two to give her four for the day.
For the day, the Captains scored 14 runs on 22 hits off Methodist pitching.
CNU has now won seven straight games and is 17-5 overall as well as 8-2 in the USA South.
Methodist falls to 19-8 overall and also 8-2 in league play.
The Captains return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Lynchburg for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
