WINCHESTER, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport University Captains (15-5, 6-2) swept a tough doubleheader at Shenandoah University (13-7, 4-4) today, taking both games by a final of 5-4. The first game was stretched to nine innings and over two hours before Kristen Olsen smacked the game-winning two-RBI single and in game two, CNU came from behind for the doubleheader sweep.

The Captains took an early lead in the first game, getting starter Melanie Hazelwood a lead in the second inning. Junior catcher Chelsea Mitchell drove in pinch runner Jordan Beadles with a double to left center.

CNU added one more in the fifth, but left the bases loaded as Shenandoah starter Brooke Over held the Captains to just two runs in regulation. It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh when the home team would force extra innings with a pair of runs. Brittany Guepe singled to shortstop with runners at second and third to cut the lead in half and the Hornets completed the comeback with a run-scoring error.

CNU reliever Elizabeth Holte finally got out of the jam and sent the game into extras. Both teams scored one in the eighth, as Olsen had an RBI double after Kelley Foate was placed on second. Shenandoah answered with the tying run on an error in the bottom half.

Finally, in the top of the ninth, late inning defensive replacement Candice Zollars walked with two outs to put two Captains on. Foate was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Olsen stepped in with a clutch two-out double, scoring a pair. Guepe pulled the Hornets back within one against Holte in the bottom half with an RBI single, but a line drive double play ended the game in favor of CNU, 5-4.

In game two, the Captains fell behind, 3-2, after the first inning, but responded by outhitting the Hornets, 10-7, in the game. After Jen Falin singled in the third, Mitchell added another RBI to her day with a single through the left side. With the game tied at three, it was USA South Player of the Week Sabrina Hill who came up with a two-RBI single in the fourth for the eventual game-winning hit.

Hill's hit plated Foate and rookie Rachel Houff in support of starter Whitney Haller. Haller picked up her sixth win of the season with a complete game, striking out five.

Olsen led the way with a 3-5 performance in the first game, with all three of her RBI coming in extra innings. Mitchell also had three RBI in the doubleheader, going 2-7 for CNU.

The Captains stay out on the road for a doubleheader against Mary Washington on Wednesday, March 21 set for 2:30 pm.
