NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University softball squad swept a USA South doubleheader Sunday at Captains Park, beating Ferrum College by scores of 7-4 and 5-2. The wins pull the Captains even with the Panthers at 4-2 in the league standings. The victories improve the 11th-ranked Captains to 13-5 overall.
In game one of the twin bill, CNU jumped out early by scoring all seven runs in the first three innings. The Captains then held on as Ferrum stormed back. The Panthers had the potential game-tying run at the plate in the seventh when junior pitcher
Elizabeth Holte, pitching in relief of starter
Krista Townsend, got Ferrum's Karly Thompson to fly out to end the game.
The Captains started the scoring in the first when freshman first baseman
Sabrina Hill hit a sacrifice fly. CNU then added three runs in both the second and third innings. Sophomore outfielder
Kelley Foate knocked in three runs and registered a double and a triple. Sophomore designated player
Taylor Dillow and junior catcher
Chelsea Mitchell also had two hits in game one for the Captains.
Townsend picked up the win in game one to improve to 4-1 on the season, while Holte earned her first save of the year. Ferrum starter Hannah Shumaker took the loss to fall to 5-3 on the year.
In the nightcap, freshman first baseman
Sabrina Hill was the story for the Captains. Hill hit two home runs, her 6th and 7th of the season, and knocked in four of CNU's five runs in the Captains' 5-2 triumph. Hill was three-for-three in game two.
CNU's other run came on a solo shot from junior catcher
Chelsea Mitchell in CNU's three-run fifth inning.
Christopher Newport starter, junior
Whitney Haller, went the distance and allowed just two unearned runs and only four hits. She is now 5-2 for the season. Ferrum starter Kaitlyn Culler suffered her first loss of the season, and is now 8-1.
Ferrum falls to 20-4 overall with the losses and 4-2 in USA South play.
The Captains, 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference, will play a USA South doubleheader Tuesday at Shenandoah.
