NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The 11th-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport split a doubleader Saturday at Captains Park with Averett University. The USA South games were the first home games of the season for CNU.
The Cougars took the opener, 3-0, behind freshman starter Leah Powell. The Captains left eight runners on base as Powell wiggled out of trouble several times. CNU loaded the bases in the second inning only to see the inning end on a double play. The Captains also stranded two runners in the sixth inning as Powell went the distance to earn the win.
Averett scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning as the Cougars were aided by two CNU errors. Christopher Newport starter, junior
Elizabeth Holte, took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season.
The Captains' bats woke up in the second game as CNU scored four runs in the first inning and then plated six more in the second to cruise to a 10-0 victory. The game was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Whitney Haller threw the five-inning shutout to improve to 4-2 on the seaon. Haller struck out eight and allowed just one hit to the Cougars.

Chelsea Mitchell knocked in two runs with a first inning single, and freshman outfielder
Rachel Houff scored two more with a second inning double. Freshman first baseman
Sabrina Hill scored twice and smacked her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning. Hill also doubled in the first inning for CNU.
The Captains ended up with 17 hits in the two games.
Keith Parr's squad is now 11-5 overall and 2-2 in USA South play.
Averett is now 9-13 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Christopher Newport will host Ferrum on Sunday at Captains Park. The USA South doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
