ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- North Carolina Wesleyan snapped CNU's seven-game winning streak, but the Captains bounced back for a doubleheader split in their USA South Athletic Conference opener today on the road. The Captains (10-4, 1-1) fell, 7-2, in the first game, but picked up a 5-1 win in game two.
The Battling Bishops (10-4, 1-1) got a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning of game one. Kendra Hoes smacked the three-run shot, giving NC Wesleyan all the run support they would need.
CNU freshman
Sabrina Hill and junior
Chelsea Mitchell each had a solo home run in the game, and sophomore
Candice Zollars was 3-3.
Paige Prichett added a three-run double in the fifth inning to assure Leanna Fann would pick up the win, her seventh of the year.
In game two, Captains starter
Whitney Haller held the Bishops offense at bay, scattering nine hits for one run allowed, while striking out six. She picked up her third win of the year, leading wire-to-wire for CNU.
Hill added a two-RBI single in the third inning to give the Captains a lead. Mitchell and
Kristina McLaughlin scored on the hit. CNU held a 2-1 advantage until the sixth inning when the Captains picked up two more. Pinch runner
Lauren Stewart scored on a wild pitch and sophomore
Taylor Dillow drove in a run with a shot to right field.
The Captains tacked on one more run in the seventh, after
Jen Falin doubled and scored on a double by Stewart. The run was the final tally of the game, running the score to the final, 5-1.
CNU heads home after the conference opener for the team's first home game of the year this weekend. The Captains will take on Averett University on Saturday, March 17 at 2:00 pm, and then Ferrum College at 1:00 pm on Sunday, March 18.
