CNU Softball Powers Past a Pair in Sea Gull Classic

Captains defeat Baruch, 23-0, and Susquehanna, 10-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALISBURY, Md. -- The bats came alive for the 15th ranked Christopher Newport Captains today, as CNU swept another doubleheader at the 2012 Sea Gull Classic in Salisbury, Maryland. CNU (9-3) beat Baruch College, 23-0, in five innings, and then beat Susquehanna University, 10-2, in six innings.

Junior Whitney Haller started the game against Baruch, holding the Bearcats to just one hit in the five-inning complete game, striking out eight in the win.

The CNU offense exploded for 23 runs, led by sophomore Kelley Foate with a 4-5 performance, driving in three with a pair of doubles and a triple. Senior Jen Falin was 3-4 with three extra-base hits including a home run, driving in three runs.

A pair of rookies had three-hit days in the offensive onslaught. Sabrina Hill was 3-5 with five RBI and Kristen Olsen added a 3-4 performance at the plate. A third freshman, Amber Arevalo, blasted her first career home run, a two-run shot.

In the second game of the day, Krista Townsend pitched all six innings, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs.  The Captains offense continued to role, picking up another game in double-figure scoring.

Junior catcher Chelsea Mitchell was 2-3 with a triple and a grand slam home run for five RBI. She was 2-3 in the first game also, finishing an impressive 4-6 on the day.  Falin picked up her second homer of the day, while senior Maggie Farris also picked up a pair of hits in both games.

CNU improved to 9-3 overall with the victories, and will kick off USA South play this week, with a doubleheader at N.C. Wesleyan.
