ATLANTA, Ga. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport Captains fell, 6-5, to #7 Emory (3-0) and bounced back for a 9-1 win in five innings against Maryville College (Tenn.) (0-3). The Eagles needed a walk-off three-run homer to get past CNU, and the Captains blasted three straight dingers to surge past the Scots.
In the first game on Sunday, junior
Melanie Hazelwood started for the Captains, suffering the loss in the final at-bat. After giving up two runs in the first, Hazelwood locked down the Eagles, allowing just three hits over the next five innings.
Offensively, the Captains built a lead with runs in the third, fourth and three in the fifth. A triple by
Chelsea Mitchell drove in two runs, after
Sabrina Hill doubled and
Jen Falin singled. Mitchell would come around to score later in the inning to give CNU a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Emory got the first two runners on before Hazelwood got a strike out and fly out to pull within one out away from the win. After a single to score one run, it was sophomore Megan Light that stepped in to deliver the final blow, a two-out three-run walk-off home run.
The Captains shrugged off the tough loss immediately, pounding out 11 hits in a five-inning win over the Scots. CNU scored three runs in the first inning with an RBI double by
Kristina McLaughlin, RBI triple from Hill and a sacrifice fly from Falin.
Junior pitcher
Whitney Haller kept Maryville off the board for the first three innings, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom half of the third. McLaughlin leaded off with a solo home run off of starter Sarah Reeder, followed by the second homer of the season by Hill. After a pitching change, Falin made it three straight with a blast of her own to give CNU a 6-0 lead.
Haller finished out the win, pitching five innings and giving up just one earned run while striking out five. McLaughlin and Hill each had two hits in the game, while nine different CNU players had at least one hit in the game.
Next time out, the Captains will head to the Beach Blast Tournament in Virginia Beach on Friday, March 2.
