NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Freshman point guard Mike Cherry scored a career-high 37 points as Christopher Newport cruised to a 106-79 win over Greensboro Saturday. The win at the Freeman Center featured 17 CNU three-point field goals, matching the all-time school record.

The Captains improved to 19-4 overall and 10-0 atop the USA South. CNU never trailed in the game, and led by as many as 29 in the second half.

"We hit some amazing shots today," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the victory. "We had a run in the second half where we couldn't miss...it really was a tremendous effort."

Cherry, who has won the USA South Rookie of the Week award four times this season, knocked down eight threes...just one shy of the single-game individual school mark. His previous career high was 26 points vs. Virginia Wesleyan at the Constant Center on January 28th.

"Mike is a special player," Krikorian continued. "He did all of that in only 25 minutes of playing time. He really got us going."

Sophomore Tra Benefield scored 27 points, going 10 of 12 from the field. Benefield was 5 for 7 from beyond the arc.

CNU led at the half, 45-33, and out-scored the Pride in the second half, 61-46. Cherry scored 20 of his 37 in the second half while Benefield scored 19 of his 27 also in the second half.

The three-point barrage matched a school record set in December of 2003 when the Captains made 17 three-pointers vs. Keystone College.

Christopher Newport is now 10-2 at the Freeman Center this season, and the Captains are now 14-0 this season when leading at halftime.

The win was the 11th in a row for CNU over Greensboro College. The Pride fell to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Freshman Devonta Davis led GC with 22 points off the bench.

The Captains, who have already wrapped up the USA South regular-season title, will be looking for their 20th win of the season as they travel to Shenandoah on Wednesday night to take on the Hornets. The game will be the final regular-season road game for CNU. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Shingleton Gymnasium and the game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and Captains Sports Live at www.CNUsports.com.
