NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University football squad has played in the NCAA Tournament eight times in the first 11 seasons of action...and the Captains are a win away from making it a ninth time in 12 years.
Matt Kelchner's team hosts Methodist Saturday night at POMOCO Stadium. It's an easy scenario for CNU...a win wraps up a conference title. The Captains are currently tied atop the league standings with Ferrum at 6-1. Christopher Newport holds the advantage in the tiebreaker due to CNU's win over Ferrum earlier this year.
"It's a good position to be in, but it doesn't mean anything unless you win," Kelchner said. "This has been a tough season in our conference, everybody is capable of beating everybody else on any given day...it makes it like a playoff game every week. We are going to need a great effort to beat Methodist."
CNU has won three straight and the Captains are now 6-3 overall. Christopher Newport holds a 9-2 lead in the all-time series vs. Methodist.
The Monarchs are 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the USA South. Methodist has won its last two games, both in overtime.
It will be "Blue Out" night at POMOCO Stadium with all fans urged to wear CNU blue. It's the final game of the regular season, and 23 CNU seniors will also be recognized prior to kickoff.
Kickoff time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, and gates will open at 6 p.m. Tickets will be available at the gates.
The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and audio and video will be available on CNUsports.com/live. The pre-game show begins at 6:30 p.m.
