Football Travels to Rocky Mount for Saturday Showdown with Bishops

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- For the final time in the 2012 regular season, the Christopher Newport football team will play on the road this Saturday. CNU heads to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to take on the Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College.

The Captains are 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the USA South following a 28-13 road win last Saturday at Averett. Matt Kelchner's squad is now in a three-way tie for the top spot in the league with LaGrange and Ferrum.

"That was a solid win for us," Kelchner said. "I was very happy with our defense once again. Offensively, we did some good things and we also blocked a punt on special teams. All in all, it was the closest thing we've had to a complete team effort this season."

Christopher Newport starting quarterback Marcus Morrast, who threw for three scores and also ran for a touchdown last week, was named the USA South's Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.

The Bishops will also be coming into the game off a victory. North Carolina Wesleyan snapped a five-game losing streak last week by beating Greensboro, 45-23. Mark Henninger's squad is now 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the USA South.

The matchup will be the ninth all-time, with the Captains holding a 5-3 series edge. CNU is 3-1 in games played in Rocky Mount. Last season at POMOCO Stadium, the Captains posted a 51-33 win over the Bishops.

CNU has had tremendous success against North Carolina schools over the years. The Captains have an all-time mark of 30-5 vs. Carolina opposition.

Game time is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Northern Nash Sports Complex in Rocky Mount. You can listen to the action Saturday on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (99.1 FM) and on Captains Sports Live (www.CNUsports.com/live)
