NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Jammed in a five-way tie for first place in the USA South following a loss last week, the CNU football team heads on the road Saturday.
Matt Kelchner's squad travels to Danville to take on Averett in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
"You've got to take care of your business every week," Kelchner said. "We saw what can happen when you don't last Saturday night. We've worked hard this week getting prepared for Averett. It's not going to be easy."
The Captains are now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The 20-6 loss to LaGrange last week snapped a 14-game league winning streak dating back to 2010.
CNU is tied with Ferrum, LaGrange, Maryville, and Greensboro at 2-1 atop the USA South standings.
Averett is 1-5 this season and 1-2 in the USA South. The Cougars are also coming off a loss last week, an 18-16 defeat at Greensboro.
The schools will be meeting for the 12th time, with CNU holding a 9-2 edge in the all-time series.

The pre-game show will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
