Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Just 50 seconds into the game, the #6 Christopher Newport University Captains found themselves in a 1-0 hole after a penalty kick. That would be the first of just five shots allowed, though, as the defense locked down #23 York College of Pennsylvania (0-2) and the Captains offense scored three times to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory in the 2011 Joe Pombriant/CNU Soccer Classic.
After the game-opening goal that put CNU down, 1-0, the Captains dominated possession throughout the opening half. CNU saw several prime scoring chances and finally cashed in on senior
Brian Lybert's second goal of the season. In the 31st minute, Lybert connected on a hard shot off a cross from senior
Winston Mattheisen. Classmate
Danny Franklin set up the score with a gorgeous through ball down the left side to Mattheisen.
Late in the first half, CNU thought they had the go-ahead goal when sophomore
Caleb Lewis crossed the ball into the net from the left side, but an offsides call negated the score and the teams went into the halftime break locked in a tie at 1-1. CNU held an 8-2 advantage in shots and defensively the starting back line kept York from building any solid chances.
In the second half, the Captains continued to maintain possession and were the aggressors offensively. Just minutes after subbing in, sophomore
Jack Cooper scored his second goal in as many days, on what would prove to be the gamewinner. The first winner of Cooper's career, the sophomore forward heeled the ball out of the air while sliding to reach a cross from junior
Andrew Bonorden.
Mattheisen would tack on an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, as the senior forward dribbled through a pair of defenders and then one-touched by a third before ripping a low liner into the left side of the goal. The score was the 41st in his career.
The Captains outshot the Spartans 17-5 in the game, including the penalty kick goal from Mike Gill. Cody Pearson also had a shot on-goal for York, as five different players took shots in the game.
CNU will return to action next Friday night as they play host to Virginia Wesleyan College (1-1) at 7:00 pm.
