SALISBURY, Md. -- The second-ranked Christopher Newport University men's soccer team (6-0-1) came away with a big win today,  shutting out #18 Salisbury University (4-2-1) on the road. It is the first time since 1986 the Captains have blanked the Sea Gulls, and also the first time since 1999 the CNU men's soccer team traveled to Salisbury and earned a win.

Senior Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the way on Wednesday with a big game, factoring into all three goals. He scored twice and added an assist on the final goal of the game. He had the gamewinner in the 9th minute of play when he laced a hard shot from just outside the 18-yard box.

The goal was the earliest of the season for CNU as they took a quick lead on the home team. Salisbury, one of the nation's top defenses allowing just four goals before today's game, kept CNU off the board for the rest of the first half despite nine shots taken by the Captains, five on-goal. CNU held Salisbury to just three first-half attempts.

CNU broke out in the second half, as Lybert added a second goal in the 56th minute of action. Junior defender Brendan Cook (Williamsburg, Va.) sent a beautiful pass in from the right side, where Lybert connected on a header for the score. The goal was his fifth of the young season, moving him into 14th all-time in career goals with 24.

Late in the second half, Lybert would add to his terrific day with an assist on the insurance goal in the 83rd minute. His pass set up Winston Mattheisen (Williamsburg, Va.) for his fifth goal of the year. The Salisbury offense ratcheted up in the second half, peppering senior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) six times in the frame, but the Captains netminder stopped all of them. He locked up his third shutout of the season and 21st of his career.

CNU outshot the Sea Gulls, 16-10, including seven shots on goal for each team. Lybert took six shots, with five of them on-net, while Mattheisen and Jalon Brown each added two shots in the contest. Salisbury was led by Elliott Crompton with two shots, both on-goal, while John Vnenchak made four saves in goal for the Sea Gulls.

The Captains return home for their next game this Saturday night, at 7:00 pm. CNU hosts their first conference game of the year as they take on rival N.C. Wesleyan (2-3-3), who won the 2010 USA South regular season championship. The game will be presented on Captains Sports Live in a video webcast and live stats will also be available.
