NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University football squad will open a new season, and a new decade, of action this Saturday. Matt Kelchner's Captains host the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg University at POMOCO Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

"It's always exciting to open a new season," Kelchner said. "Everybody is 0-0 and has high hopes. We've practiced hard and it will be good to get on the field for a game that counts."

The Captains had a scrimmage at Bridgewater cancelled due to Hurricane Irene last weekend. The squad has been hard at work since reporting on August 10th.

CNU is coming off a 6-5 season in 2010, and the program's seventh NCAA bid in ten years of play. The Captains won their last five regular-season games last season to earn the USA South title.

Saturday's opener will be the first meeting ever with Waynesburg, a squad that went 6-4 last season.

The game will also be the only 1 p.m. home start for the Captains. POMOCO Stadium features lights for the first time in 2011, and the next three home games will be 7 p.m. kickoffs. The regular-season finale on November 12th vs. Maryville will be a 4 p.m. start.

Tickets will be on sale Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the POMOCO Stadium entrance. Gates will open at 12 noon.
