DANVILLE, Va. -- The CNU softball team ran its win streak to 13 today, with a pair of wins over USA South foe Averett University (19-15, 8-8) on the road. More importantly, though, the Captains grabbed the top seed in the coming USA South Tournament. The Captains got five hits each from a pair of freshmen, Kristina McLaughlin and Candice Zollars as they improved to 28-8 overall, 15-1 in league action.

With the sweep, the Captains locked up the #1 seed in the upcoming USA South Tournament and will face the winner of the #8/9 game on Friday's opening round.

In game one, Krista Townsend pitched the full six innings as the Captains came away with a 10-0 win after six. Townsend gave up just three hits and a walk while striking out six for CNU. She improved to 6-1 on the season as the Captains offense came out in support of the sophomore hurler.

Christopher Newport stroked 13 hits in the first game led by McLaughlin's 3-for-4 performance with two RBI and one run. Zollars also went 2-for-3 and scored three times. Kelly Foate had a 2-RBI triple in the second, highlighting a four-run inning for the Captains. CNU would add two more in the fourth and round out the scoring with a four-run sixth.

The second game was much the same for CNU as sophomore Whitney Haller spun a gem for the Captains, improving to 14-3 overall this season with a complete game two-hitter. Haller gave up just one unearned run and struck out three as CNU blasted past the Cougars, 10-1.

CNU scored in every inning of the second game, as Foate had a stellar game at the top of the lineup. She was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. The Captains got multi-hit games from McLaughlin, Zollars, Chelsea Mitchell, and Lauren Rowley and all but one starter had at least one hit. Mitchell was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Zollars finished game two with three hits in four at-bats and two runs scored.

On the day, the Captains were led by McLaughlin, Zolalrs and Foate with five hits each. Foate had four RBI out of the leadoff slot and Zollars scored five times in the doubleheader.

The Captains return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Ferrum College to wrap up the USA South schedule.
