NEWPORT NEWS, VA.- Christopher Newport concluded a successful weekend Sunday with a softball doubleheader sweep of Meredith. CNU pitchers enjoyed great success for the second straight day, with sophomore
Whitney Haller throwing a no-hitter in the second game against the Avenging Angels.
CNU has now won nine straight games and the Captains improved to 24-8 overall and 11-1 atop the USA South Athletic Conference.
The Captains won the opener, 4-0, behind the shutout pitching of sophomore
Krista Townsend (Midlothian, Va.). Townsend allowed no runs on four hits in six innings of work to improve to 5-1 on the season. She threw a complete game shutout on Saturday and struck out nine in a CNU victory over Peace.
Christopher Newport scored two runs in the first inning of the opener on bases-loaded walks. The Captains then added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Freshmen
Kelley Foate (Richmond, Va.) and
Kristina McLaughlin (Virginia Beach, Va.) each had two singles in game one to account for all four hits for the Captains.
In the nightcap, CNU defeated Meredith by a 3-0 score behind the pitching of sophomore
Whitney Haller (Chesterfield, Va.).. Haller, who had defeated Peace on Saturday while allowing just one unearned run in five innings, faced just 22 batters on Sunday against the Avening Angels. The only MC runner to reach base did so on an error, and Haller struck out seven while allowing no runs, no hits, and no walks. She improved to 12-3 with the win.
Seniors
Ashley Mani (Chesapeake, Va.) and
Jessie Atkinson (Mechanicsville, Va.) each had two hits in the nightcap for the Captains.
Meredith falls to 10-19 overall with the losses and is now 5-8 in conference play.
In the four games played this weekend, Haller threw 12 innings and allowed just one unearned run and struck out 12. Townsend pitched 13 innings and struck out 13 batters while allowing no runs.
The Captains will play their final regular-season home games on Tuesday. CNU will host North Carolina Wesleyan at Captains Field in a USA South doubleheader beginning at 3 pm.
