Captains Advance to USA South Championship with 19-4 Win Over Ferrum

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The Christopher Newport University Captains advance to the championship game after a 19-4 win over Ferrum College. The Captains improve to 12-2 with the win while Ferrum drops to 10-5.

The Captains struck first just 32 seconds into the game with a goal from Jessica Singer. Ferrum answered just five minutes later with an unassisted goal from Brooke Hewartson. CNU scored the next three before Ferrum scored their second of the game to make it 4-2 at 21:45 in the first half.

CNU then went on a six-goal run to take a 10-2 lead. Hewartson scored her second goal of the game to bring Ferrum within seven at 11:03. The Captains scored four more before the half to give them a 14-3 lead at the half.

The Captains scored five in the second half to extend their lead to 19-3. Anna Wheeler scored with 10:31 remaining to make it 19-4 where the score stayed through the end of the game.

Ashton Marshall led the Captains with six goals and two assists. She was followed by Kaitlin Quigley with four goals and two assists. Singer scored two and added two assists. Meghan Harkey scored one and dished out four assists.

The Captains will take on the winner of today's Greensboro and Shenandoah game in the championship game to be played tomorrow at 1:00pm weather permitting.
