NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport softball team swept a doubleheader Wednesday, beating the University of Mary Washington by scores of 8-1 and 12-1. The non-conference doubleheader was played at Captains Park on the CNU campus.
 
CNU plated 20 runs on 21 hits in the twin bill, and smacked four home runs. The Captains are now 9-3 on the season while Mary Washington falls to 5-13.
 
In the opener, Christopher Newport scored six times in the second inning and cruised to the 8-1 win. Senior Jessie Atkinson(Mechanicsville, Va.) opened the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning, her third of the season. Junior Jen Falin (Williamsburg, Va.) later went deep with a two-run shot in the sixth inning, also her third of the year.
 
Senior Ashley Mani (Chesapeake, Va.) brought home three runs in the second inning with a bases-clearing double. Freshman Kristina McLaughlin was three-for-three with three singles.
 
Sophomore starter Elizabeth Holte (Richmond, Va.) went the distance in game one, scattering six hits and improving to 4-1 in 2011.
 
In the nightcap, the Captains scored five runs in both the second and third innings to open up the lead. Freshman Kelley Foate(Richmond, Va.) hit a two-run home run and sophomore Chelsea Mitchell (Mechanisville, Va.) smacked a three-run shot in the third inning. CNU capitalized on four Mary Washington errors in game two resulting in five unearned runs.
 
Sophomore Whitney Haller (Chesterfield, Va.) picked up the victory to improve to 4-1 on the year, allowing just three hits. The game was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.
 
CNU now leads the all-time series with Mary Washington, 33-7. The Captains, now 9-3, will play this weekend in Salisbury, Maryland, in the Sea Gull Invitational. The Captains will play Gettysburg and Salisbury on Friday and York and Wilkes on Saturday.
