LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Christopher Newport University Captains took down the Hornets of Lynchburg College 14-11 on the road today. They improved to 4-0 on the year giving them their best season start in program history.
Lynchburg struck first just 26 seconds into the game off an unassisted goal from Kendall Adkin. CNU answered under a minute later with
Kaitlin Quigley scoring her first off a pass from
Meghan Harkey. The Captains traded the next four goals making it an even 3-3 with 21:55 remaining in the first half.
Lynchburg went on a three-goal run taking a 6-3 lead. Two of the goals were free position shots. CNU quickly answered with three goals of their own tying the game again at six apiece with 7:44 remaining in the first half.
Lynchburg was able to put two more on the board in the final minutes of the first half to take a two-goal lead at the half.
CNU came out strong in the second half scoring four unanswered goals in just under twelve minutes of play giving the Captains a 10-8 lead. The Hornets put one in the net and the Captains fired back with three more goals to go up 13-9 with 9:12 left in the game.
The Captains held onto their lead scoring one more and allowing two in the last eight minutes of play to win the game 14-11.
Quigley led the Captains with five goals and two assists giving her a part of seven of the Captains' goals.
Rachel Tomlinson scored four goals and
Ashton Marshall picked up two. Also scoring was Harkey,
Lauren King and
Becca Geist. Harkey led in assists with four assists and Quigley and King picked up two apiece.
Goalkeeper
Hannah Wilkerson made 14 saves in her fourth win of the year.
