CNU Softball Sweeps Shenandoah

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball team won two USA South Conference games Monday over Shenandoah. The Captains took the opener, 6-1, and then shut out the Hornets in the nightcap, 3-0, at Captains Field. The doubleheader had been moved to Monday due to bad weather on Sunday.

In the first game, the Captains broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third inning en route to the 6-1 victory. Junior second baseman Jen Falin (Williamsburg, Va.) was two-for-two and knocked in three runs for CNU, two coming on her fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning as the Captains put the game on ice.

Sophomore Krista Townsend (Midlothian, Va.) made just her fourth start of the season and made the most of it, going the distance and allowing just one run on six hits to improve to 3-1 for the year. Junior Brooke Over took the loss for the Hornets to fall to 8-5.

The solid Christopher Newport pitching would continue in game two of the twin bill. Sophomore Whitney Haller again showed great stuff and shut out the Hornets, 3-0. Haller, a product of Chesterfield, pitched a complete game scattering five hits and striking out four. She upped her record for the year to 9-3.

CNU scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to complete the sweep. Jen Falin again led the offense, going two-for-three with a double and an RBI single. Falin would finish the day four-for-five at the plate with four RBI.

Senior first baseman Lauren Rowley (Lorton, Va.) was two-for-three with an RBI in game two for CNU.

Sophomore Amanda Litwin took the loss in game two for Shenandoah, and is now 0-2 on the season.

With the sweep, Keith Parr's Captains are now 18-8 on the season and 5-1 in USA South play. Shenandoah falls to 13-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

The Captains head to Staunton on Tuesday for a USA South doubleheader with Mary Baldwin. The games will begin at 2:30 pm, and were originally scheduled for Wednesday but have been moved up due to a forecast of bad weather.
