Captains Split Softball Doubleheader with Greensboro

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team split a pair of USA South conference games Saturday with Greensboro College. The Pride took the opener, 7-3, while the Captains won the nightcap, 6-2, on a cloudy and cold day at Captains Field.

Senior catcher Brittany Parsons did most of the damage for the Pride in game one. After the Captains jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring double from senior Ashley Mani (Chesapeake, Va.), Parsons tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the second. It was the first of three hits for Parsons, who would end up three-for-four with four runs batted in.

The Pride broke the 1-1 tie by plating three runs in the third. Two came on a home run from GC third baseman Becca Pink. The Pride would pull away by scoring three more in the sixth on Parsons' second home run of the day, a three-run shot and the third long ball of the game for the Pride.

Greensboro freshman starter Kelsey Sanfilippo went five innings, allowing just two runs, and picked up the victory to improve to 4-2. Christopher Newport starter, sophomore Elizabeth Holte (Richmond, Va.) was knocked out of the game in the third inning and took the loss to fall to 6-4.

In the second game, sophomore Whitney Haller (Chesterfield, Va.) pitched a gem for the Captains. Haller went the distance, struck out 10, and didn't allow an earned run as CNU prevailed, 6-2. Haller did not allow a run until the top of the seventh inning, when the Pride scored their only runs of the game.

The Captains jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on run-scoring singles from senior Lauren Rowley (Lorton, Va.) and sophomore Chelsea Mitchell (Mechanicsville, Va.). CNU added three unearned runs in the third to open the lead. Junior Felicia Price (Sterling, Va.) knocked in two with a double to center as the Captains built the lead and never looked back.

Haller improved to 8-3 with the win, while GC starter Hannah Pennell took the loss to fall to 5-5. Greensboro is now 9-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

Christopher Newport is now 16-8 overall and 3-1 in the USA South.

The Captains will play a doubleheader against Shenandoah on MONDAY AT 3 PM at Captains Field. The games were scheduled to be played Sunday, but have been moved to Monday due to expected rain and cold temperatures on Sunday.
