NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team suffered a tough 12-11 loss to Kenyon College today on Captains Field. After fighting back to tie the game up the Lords scored in the final seconds to take the victory.
Adam Abbate put the Captains on the board just 20 seconds into the game off a pass from
Ari Elgort. The Captains and Lords traded the next five goals making it 3-2.
Rob Koster put his first goal of the day in with 2:57 left in the first period giving the Captains the 4-2 lead heading into the second.
Kenyon came out on fire in the second period scoring four straight goals to take a 6-4 lead.
Chase Walton scored the only goal of the period for the Captains with 2:04 remaining before Kenyon put up three more in two minutes of play to make it 9-5 at halftime.
Dominic Gianino took over in the net for
Andy McGregor to start the second half for the Captains and held Kenyon to only two goals in the third period. The Captains also put up two bringing the score to 11-7 in favor of the Lords going into the fourth period.
CNU came back in the fourth ready to reclaim the game and scored their first goal just 20 second in. The next goal of the game was scored almost nine minutes later as the Captains pulled to within two with 5:52 on the clock. Koster scored his third of the day with 2:16 remaining to make it 11-10.
As the clock was winding down the Captains had possession and
Coach Todd Boward called a timeout with 30 seconds on the clock. The Captains used up 15 seconds setting up a shot and Walton put his second goal of the game in the back of the net.
The Captains won the faceoff but turned the ball over allowing the Lords to race down the field and take one shot that slipped past Gianino for the game winner with three seconds left on the clock.
Koster led the Captains with four goals followed by Walton and
John Glaser with two.
Teddy Pekalski picked up six ground balls for the Captains and
Steven West led with three caused turnovers.
Gianino picked up seven saves in just 30 minutes of play and only allowed three goals.
The Captains host Farmingdale State College on Tuesday, March 22, at 4:00pm.
