Captains Edged by St. Vincent for Their First Loss of the Season, 9-8

LATROBE, Pa, - The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season today to St. Vincent, 9-8. The loss drops the Captains to 3-1. The Captains were led by Kyle Pasta with three goals.

The Captains jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter with a goal from John Glaser at 10:38 and another from Pasta with just five seconds left on the clock.

Thirty seconds into the second quarter the Captains struck again with another Pasta goal assisted by Billy Crist. Chase Walton scored at 11:43 to give the Captains the 4-0 lead that lasted until the half.

The third quarter belonged to St. Vincent as they scored five unanswered goals to take the 5-4 lead. Ryan Kearney and Zach Wilfong each picked up a pair.

The Captains came back in the fourth period with three goals in the first four minutes of play.  Glaser scored just three seconds into play with Matt Gleisner getting on the board almost two minutes later and Pasta picking up his third at 11:19.

St. Vincent answered with three of their own to take an 8-7 lead. Gleisner tied it up for the Captains at 1:42 but the Captains were unable to hold off St. Vincent as they put in the winning goal with just 49 seconds on the clock.

Pasta led with three goals and Glaser and Gleisner each had two. Crist had the two assists of the game for the Captains. Goalkeeper Andy McGregor had a team-high six ground balls and also had 12 saves in the game.

The Captains return to action on Wednesday, March 16 as they travel to Ashland, Va. to take on Randolph-Macon College at 3:30 pm.
