NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport won two tight games Tuesday over Salisbury, winning both ends of a non-conference doubleheader in walk-off fashion. The Captains, ranked 14th in the nation this week, improved to 4-2 with the victories at Captains Field.

CNU took the opener, 1-0, by plating the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior third baseman Jessie Atkinson (Mechanicsville, Va.) delivered the winning hit scoring senior outfielder Ashley Mani (Chesapeake, Va.) with the game's only run. Sophomore starter Elizabeth Holte (Richmond, Va.) went the distance scattering five hits and holding the Sea Gulls scoreless. Holte improved to 3-0 with the win.

Salisbury starter Erika Brittingham struck out 10 CNU batters and took the hard-luck loss, falling to 2-1. Salisbury stranded eight runners in the opener.

In the nightcap, the Captains prevailed in eight innings, 4-3. CNU freshman outfielder Kelley Foate (Richmond, Va.) provided the winning margin with a game-ending sacrifice fly scoring fellow freshman Kristina McLaughlin (Virginia Beach, Va.), who had been placed at second base to begin the inning. McLaughlin advanced to third on a wild pitch setting up the sacrifice fly to win the game.

Sophomore Whitney Haller (Chesterfield, Va.) went the distance in the second game allowing only two earned runs and five hits in eight innings. Haller is now 1-1 on the year.

Erica Brittingham entered the game for Salisbury in the fifth inning in relief of starter Kelly Leary. Brittingham again took the loss to fall to 2-2. Brittingham wiggled out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Captains loaded the bases with nobody out, only to be turned away to force the extra inning.

Senior outfielder Ashley Mani (Chesapeake, Va.) had two hits in the second game and three for the day for the Captains. Salisbury first baseman Harley Hill had three hits for the Sea Gulls in the twin bill, and outfielder Sarah Alpaugh smashed the only home run of the day, a solo shot in game two.

The Captains are now 4-2 in 2011 and will play this weekend in the Beach Blast in Virginia Beach. CNU opens play on Friday with games against Rowan and Wilkes and then will take on Randolph and Washington College on Saturday.

Salisbury, ranked #11 in the nation this week, is now 3-3 on the year..
