Women’s Lacrosse Wins Thrilling Season Opener over Adrian, 18-17

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University senior Kaitlin Quigley (Round Hill, VA) scored her third goal of the game with just 34 seconds left in regulation to lift the Captains over Adrian College 18-17. Meghan Harkey (Purcellville, VA) led the Captains having a part of nine of CNU's goals. She picked up four goals and added five assists.

CNU struck first just under three minutes into the game with a goal from Becca Geist (Fairfax,VA) assisted by Harkey. After an Adrian free position goal the Captains put three more on the board to take a 4-1 lead early in the game.

Adrian answered with five straight goals before Lauren King (Fairfax, VA) put one in for the Captains bringing them back to within one goal of the Bulldogs, 5-6. Adrian scored one more before the Captains poured on four goals in the last five and a half minutes of first half. With the score tied at 10-10 the Bulldogs were able to score one more goal with two seconds left in the half to go up 11-10 at halftime.

Two minutes into the second half the Captains scored from another free position shot to even the score. The Bulldogs and Captains then traded a pair of goals before Adrian took the lead 14-12 with two more goals.

With 18:27 left on the clock the Captains started a four-goal run with Quigley and Rachel Tomlinson (Springfield, VA) scoring one and King scoring two to put the Captains up 16-14. Bulldog Cassie Hoyez scored the next two goals to even the score again and then went ahead by one with 7:09 remaining in the game.

With just four minutes left Harkey scored her fourth goal of the game to tie it up at 17 apiece. The Captains maintained possession of the ball as time was winding down on the clock. With just 34 seconds left Quigley shot and scored to give the Captains the 18-17 win.

Adrian had 36 shots to CNU's 34 while CNU picked up 18 ground balls to the Bulldog's 11.

Harkey led with four goals while Quigley, Tomlinson and King each had three. Harkey had the most assists with five giving her nine points in the game. Monica Evans (Springfield, VA) led in ground balls with five. Morgan Layton (Ocean City, MD), Evans and Tomlinson each picked up two caused turnovers.

Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Wilkerson (Falls Church, Va.) picked up her first collegiate win making 11 saves in the net for the Captains.

The Captains return to action on Tuesday, in their first USA South game of the year, as they travel to LeGrange, Ga. to take on LaGrange College.
