NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team opens up their 2011 season with a 1:00 pm game against Adrian College on Saturday. This is the season opener for Adrian as well and the first meeting between the Captains and Bulldogs in program history.

The Captains are coming off a 13-7 season in which they won the USA South regular season title for the third year in a row. They also took home the Tournament Championship for the fifth consecutive season.

The Captains were led offensively in 2010 by USA South Player of the Year Kaitlin Quigley (Round Hill, VA) and Meghan Harkey (Purcellville, VA) who combined for 139 of the team's 289 goals. Quigley led with 76 goals while Harkey had 59. Harkey led when it came to assists with 46 and Quigley added 27.

Defensively the Captains will look to senior Morgan Layton (Ocean City, MD) and sophomore Monica Evans (Springfield, VA) to lead the way. Evans led the team with 41 ground balls followed by Layton with 34 in 2010. Evans also led in caused turn¬overs with 23 while Layton had 13.

The Bulldogs are in their fourth sea¬son of program history and their first in a conference. They joined the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference this year after a 14-3 record last year.

Junior Rachel Johnston led the team with 69 goals in 2010 and was tied for the lead with 32 assists. Junior Amanda Lambert scored 56 goals and added 32 assists, tying Johnston for the team lead.
