MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Christopher Newport University (17-0-1) scored early in the second half and held on for the 1-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan (7-5-6) to win their third straight USA South Conference Championship. Senior
Winston Mattheisen netted the gamewinner and became the program's all-time leader in scoring en route to the Tournament MVP honors. The second-ranked Captains will wait to hear on Monday their NCAA fate in a selection show webcast at NCAASports.com.
CNU remains undefeated on the season through 18 games while the Bishops fall to 7-5-6 overall.
The lone goal of the 2011 championship came just one minute into the second half when junior defender
Sean Moriarty took a free kick on the right side of the field. His perfect cross found the middle of the box where Mattheisen leaped and flicked a header over the diving goalkeeper Alberto Faisca.
The goal moves Mattheisen out of a tie and into sole possession of the all-time scoring title at Christopher Newport, with 116 career points. The assist for Moriarty gave him a point in each tournament game, after scoring a goal on Friday night. The defender also helped CNU lock down its 11th shutout of the season, earning All-Tournament honors for his effort.
Joining Mattheisen and Moriarty on the All-Tournament team were teammates
Steven Farmer (MF),
Brian Lybert (F) and
David Haas (D).
Defensively, the Captains were strong in the championship game, allowing just four shots on-goal. Senior goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe stopped all four shots to tie the program-record for shutouts in a season with 10.
Stay tuned to CNUsports.com on Monday, November 7 as the Captains learn their fates for the NCAA Tournament. The men's soccer championship was the third won for the Captains on Saturday, as the women's volleyball and football teams also clinched NCAA Tournament berths.
