NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-ranked Christopher Newport University men's soccer team saw its undefeated season come to a startling conclusion tonight, as Randolph College (17-5-0) upset the Captains in the NCAA Tournament First Round, 2-1. CNU wraps the 2011 season with a 17-1-1 overall mark, the best mark in school history, based on win percentage.

Randolph advances to play DeSales (15-4-2) in the NCAA Tournament Second Round set for 6:00 pm at Captains Field on Sunday.

In front of a record crowd of nearly 2,000, the Captains dominated the attacking end of the field all night. Still, it was the WildCats that took a 2-0 lead in the game, forcing CNU to play for a come-from-behind victory.

Leading scorer Corey Sindle connected on a rebound of his own shot in the 16th minute of action as the ball squirted away from senior goalkeeper Justin Wolfe. It was the 14th goal of the season for Sindle.

The Captains outshot Randolph, 12-4, in the first half, but put just two on-frame. Then, the WildCats added a second goal early in the second half. Nick Cornell collected a loose ball on the left side and sent a low bouncer into the box. Wolfe appeared to have a bead on it, diving to his left, but the ball took a bad hop just in front of the keeper and skipped into the right side of the goal.

In a 2-0 hole and over 40 minutes remaining, the Captains ratcheted up the pressure. The pressure finally paid off in the 55th minute, when rookie Jalon Brown sent a long switch to sophomore Caleb Lewis, who one-timed it into the box. Senior Winston Mattheisen flicked a lofted shot over the keepers head and into the goal to cut the lead in half, 2-1.

CNU continued to press, looking for the equalizer, and outshot the WildCats 28-7 in the contest as they dominated possession. The Captains had several break-away opportunities that were saved by the Randolph keeper, Carter Smith. Smith had nine saves in the game and his defense also picked one off of the goal line for a tenth save.

Randolph was led by Cornell, with three shots including two on-goal, while Sindle added two shots, both on-goal.

The Captains were led in attempts by Brian Lybert with five shots, putting four on-goal, while Mattheisen had four shots, two on-goal including the goal. As a team, the Captains put 11 shots on-frame while Randolph managed just five.

Wolfe made three saves in his lone loss of the season, as he became the program's all-time leader in goals against average. Mattheisen's goal was his 13th of the season, tying him with Ian MacPherson for the all-time program best mark of 51 career goals.
