Captains Fall to Eagles 3-2 in Overtime

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team suffered a tough overtime loss to the University of Mary Washington. The Eagles edged the Captains 3-2.

Fifteen minutes into the game the Captains struck first with a goal from junior Chrissy Kurecki. The Eagles had three penalty corners and four shots before scoring their first of the game. Kaitlin Ripley scored at 29:34 with the assist going to Morgan Jones.

The Eagles came out in the second half and earned a corner and took a shot within the first minute of play. But a defensive save by junior Breanne Lowe kept the score at a 1-1 tie. The Captains had a penalty corner followed by two for the Eagles. But both defensive units were able to prevent any goals.

After shots by both teams the Captains earned four corners in a row and eventually slipped a goal in to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Caitlin Cahill scored off an assist from sophomore Marlene Lichty at 52:09.

A minute and a half later the Eagles notched their second goal of the game to tie the score at two.

Despite six shots by the Captains and only one from the Eagles, the score remained 2-2 at the end of regulation.

The Captains had the first real chance at a goal in overtime earning a corner just two and a half minutes in, but were unable to capitalize. Two minutes later the Eagles earned three straight penalty corners and were able to score on the last at 76:17 to take the win.

The Eagles outshot the Captains just 17 to 15 while the Captains put 15 on goal while only 12 of the Eagles' were on goal. The two teams were even with 15 corners apiece.

CNU goalkeeper Jamie Dowling made six saves and UMW goalkeeper made 12 saves.

The loss drops the Captains to 5-3 while the Eagles improve to 10-3.

CNU returns to the field on Sunday, October 9, as they host Shenandoah University. Game time is set for 2:00pm.
