NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University field hockey team fell to visiting Haverford College 2-1 in their second overtime loss of the year. The loss drops the Captains to 10-4 and improves the Fords to 8-7.

Most of the first half was played in the midfield as both teams battled back and forth for possession of the ball. At the 28 minute mark the Fords moved the ball into their offensive circle and Bridget Gibbons passed the ball to Mary Hobbs who was waiting at the stroke mark. Hobbs slapped it in past the CNU defense and goalkeeper Jamie Dowling giving them the 1-0 advantage.

But the Captains didn't take long to answer. Just three minutes later Lauren Cheatham reached for a ball heading out of bounds and hit it back to Jordan Snider across the cage who knocked it in past the Haverford goalie to tie the game at one goal apiece.

The Captains dominated the second half taking 11 shots to Haverford's one but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities leaving it a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation.

The teams dropped to seven players on each side for the first 15-minute sudden-victory overtime period. After earning four penalty corners and putting the pressure on the Captains the Fords were able to knock in a goal to take the victory eight minutes and 41 seconds into overtime.

The Captains outshot the Fords 18 to 13 and had 15 penalty corners to the Fords' 12. Dowling had seven saves in the cage for the Captains while Haverford goalie Sydney Hyder had 11.

CNU returns to action on October 29 as they travel to Alexandria, Va. to take on Rowan College in a neutral site match. Game time is slated for 2:30pm.
