NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-ranked CNU men's soccer team improved to 11-0-1 overall, 3-0-0 in USA South action tonight, when they blasted past North Carolina Wesleyan (4-4-4, 1-1-0), 4-0. The Captains scored three goals in the first half and senior
Justin Wolfe collected his fifth shutout of the season.
Christopher Newport got out to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of action when sophomore
Caleb Lewis found scoring leader
Brian Lybert down the right side. Lybert dribbled inside, getting past two defenders and smoking a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal.
Just moments after the first goal, Bishops defender Adama George was charged with a yellow, followed by a red, giving CNU a man-up advantage for the rest of the match. Then, in the 22nd minute, junior
Michael Breske was tackled inside the box giving CNU a penalty kick. Senior
Winston Mattheisen stepped up and drilled a shot to the right for his 10th goal of the season.
Mattheisen is now just three goals away from tying the all-time goals scored mark in CNU soccer history, while just two points away from becoming the all-time leading scorer.
The Captains offense continued to push in the first half, outshooting the Bishops 11-2 in the frame. With less than eight minutes remaining in the half, sophomore
Alex Makumbi connected with his first goal of the season.
Karl Kummer made a run up the right side, crossed a pass into the center of the box where Makumbi corraled it and fired a hard shot into the top of the goal.
The CNU offense wasn't done, adding one more goal in the second half for the final score, 4-0. Makumbi added an assist to his night when he and junior midfielder
Denny Arinello were streaking down the left side. Makumbi slipped a pass through to Arinello past the defender, and Arinello's shot found the right side of the goal.
The four goals were the most surrendered all year by N.C. Wesleyan, and doubled starting goalkeeper Alberto Faisca's goals allowed on the season. Faisca had only allowed four goals in eight games prior to Tuesday night against the Captains.
Wolfe had to make just one save to preserve the shutout, facing seven shots on the night. The Captains took 22 shots in the game, including nine on-goal against Faisca.
The Captains will return to action in league play this Saturday night, as they take on Methodist University at 7:00 pm. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for the contest, all at CNUsports.com.
