NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The fifth-ranked CNU men's soccer squad earned a third straight victory to start the 2010 season when rookie
Alex Makumbi (Kampala, Uganda) knocked home his second of the season in the 74th minute to beat Stockton College (2-1), 1-0.
CNU dominated the attack, taking 24 shots, including 13 on-frame. The Captains were led by junior midfielder
Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii) with seven shots and six on-net. The Stockton keeper, Tim Brett, was up to the task for much of the game, making 11 saves.
The Captains best chance in the first half came in the 43rd minute when Makumbi got loose on the left side, but his shot was just left, glancing off the post. With the score still empty in the second half, head coach
Steve Shaw entered Makumbi and
Winston Mattheison (Norfolk, Va.) off the bench. With under 20 minutes to play, Mattheison collected the ball at the top of the box and touched it to the freshman forward on the left side. Makumbi unleashed a low drive into the far corner for the score and the eventual gamewinner.
Stockton pressed, but was unable to get a high quality opportunity down the stretch. Three Ospreys had shots on goal, in Tom Parkinson, Kyle Evans, and Chris Hayman, but the team had just seven shots in all in the game.
CNU goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe notched his second shutout of the season, making two saves in the victory. Makumbi's goal was his second of the season for the Captains.
CNU will return to action next weekend as they play in the 2010 Marlins Classic with games on Friday, September 10 and Saturday, September 11. The 5th ranked Captains will face Rowan and Kean University.
