NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU men's soccer team, ranked #2 in the nation according to the HendrickCars.com/NSCAA Coaches Poll, will put their perfect record on the line in the USA South season opener tomorrow night, as they host Averett University at 7 pm.
Christopher Newport is 7-0 this season, outscoring opponents 25-3 with four shutouts so far, as they have rolled through non-conference opponents. The Captains will enter league play tomorrow, though, as they look to continue their tremendous start. Last season, CNU dropped Averett twice, including in the USA South semifinals.
CNU is led by junior midfielder
Brian Lybert, who has scored four goals and added seven assists for a team-high 15 points. Junior goalkeeper
Justin Wolfe has anchored an impressive defensive front, posting a 0.44 goals against average, playing all but 15 minutes so far this season.
Averett has exploded offensively this year and are off to a 6-3 start. The Cougars have already scored 30 goals and have posted 80 points in their first nine games, led by Richard Bjornander with 18 points. Bjornander has scored seven goals and has added four assists.
