Box Score EAU CLAIRE, WI- The red-hot Christopher Newport University softball squad made quick work of Eastern Connecticut State Friday. The Captains, playing in their first NCAA "Elite 8," stomped the Warriors, 8-0, in a game shortened to five innings due to the 8-run rule. It was CNU's fifth straight win in the 2010 NCAA Softball Tournament.
CNU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Ashley Mani started the scoring with an RBI double bringing home
Mary Kennedy. The Captains put the game away with five more runs in the bottom of the third.
Jen Falin and
Taylor Morgan each knocked in two runs for CNU.
Senior pitcher
Kristen Rowe was dominant again, throwing her fourth straight shutout. Rowe has now allowed just one earned run in 31 innings pitched in NCAA play this season. Rowe struck out five and scattered four hits as she improved to 23-4 on the season.
The Captains are now 41-8, and will play Saturday night at 7:30 (ET) against East Texas Baptist. CNU and East Texas Baptist played back in March in Florida, a game the Captains lost, 3-2.
Keith Parr's squad has set a school record with 41 wins this season, and the softball squad is the first athletic squad at Christopher Newport to win more than 40 games in a season.
