Softball Win Streak Reaches 12 in Sweep of Averett

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University softball squad ran its winning streak to 12 games on Friday with a USA South doubleheader sweep over Averett. The Captains took the opener, 2-0, and then won the nightcap, 9-1, in five innings at Captains Park. 

CNU took advantage of three Averett errors in the first game, and both runs scored were unearned. Kristen Rowe threw the complete-game shutout to improve to 15-3 on the season. Captains center-fielder Ashley Mani posted two of CNU's four hits in the victory.

In the second game, Christopher Newport scored four runs in the first and four more in the second inning to cruise to the 9-1 win. Catcher Chelsea Mitchell was three-for-three with a single, double, and sixth home run of the season. First baseman Kristen Nickloy also homered, a two-run shot that was her third of the season. Elizabeth Holte pitched the first four innings to pick up the win and improve to 14-2 on the season.

The Captains, ranked #4 in the country, are now 32-6 on the season and 14-2 atop the USA South. Averett falls to 6-21 overall and 4-12 in league play.

CNU concludes the regular season on Saturday with a home doubleheader with Ferrum. The USA South twin bill will begin at 1 pm at Captains Park, and will be preceded by Senior Day ceremonies honoring seven Christopher Newport student/athletes.
