Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University softball team ended the 2010 regular season with a flourish Saturday, beating Ferrum twice to wrap up the USA South Athletic Conference regular season championship. The Captains, ranked #4 in the nation, finished the season with a mark of 34-6 and a 16-2 final record in conference play.
As the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament CNU will get a bye and play the winner of a game between No. 8 N.C. Wesleyan and No. 9 Averett at 1 p.m. Friday in Burlington, N.C.
CNU beat Ferrum in the opener, 7-1, and took the nightcap by a score of 8-2 at Captains Park.
Keith Parr's squad ends the regular season riding a 14-game winning streak and will open play in the USA South Tournament on Friday in Burlington, North Carolina.
In the first game, the Captains used the long ball to open their lead. Second baseman Jennifer Falin smacked a two-run home run in the fourth inning and first baseman
Taylor Morgan cracked a three-run shot in the sixth.
Kristen Rowe went the distance, striking out seven, to improve her record to 16-2 on the season.
In the second game, CNU jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back. Centerfielder
Ashley Mani had two hits and drove home two runs, and shortstop
Mary Kennedy and catcher
Chelsea Mitchell each also had two hits.
Elizabeth Holte threw the first five innings to earn the victory to got to 14-3 for the year.
Ferrum ends the regular season with a record of 25-13 and 13-5 in the USA South.
