NEWPORT NEWS -- Christopher Newport's men's tennis team closed its regular season on a five-match winning streak and made Senior Day memorable with a 9-0 victory Saturday afternoon over Methodist.
The Captains will be the No. 2 seed at the USA South Tournament and will play Shenandoah Friday at 1 p.m. in Burlington, N.C.
Martin Brown and
Dylan Young were playing their final home match, and both did so in style. Brown teamed with
Tom Whaling to overcome a 5-2 deficit and win 8-5 at No. 3 doubles, then gained a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles.
Young won the last three games for a 6-0, 7-5 triumph at No. 6 singles.
No. 1 player
Eric Shulman continued on his torrid pace to reach the NCAA Division III singles tournament as a sophomore, winning 6-1, 6-1. He has lost to only one D-III opponent this season.
Shulman,
Lorenzo Sison, Gian Heyer and
Dusty Nelson joined Brown as victors in singles and doubles.
Methodist (9-7, 3-2) will play at Averett on Sunday in Danville, with the winner likely to be the No. 3 seed. The Monarchs defeated Virginia Wesleyan 9-0 earlier Saturday before driving across the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to take on the Captains.
