Women's Basketball Headed to Sweet 16 With 72-48 Win Over Roanoke

 

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - CNU held Roanoke scoreless for over ten minutes in the first half, building a 20-point lead and went on to a 72-48 second round NCAA win over the Maroons Saturday night at the Freeman Center. The win sends the Captains on to the Sweet 16 where they will face 21-6 Rochester at a site and time to be determined.

Trailing, 14-13, CNU got a layup from Chelsea Schweers at the 12:20 mark of the first half that ignited a 21-0 run ending with CNU in charge, 34-14, with 3:08 left in the half. During the stretch Roanoke missed 23 consecutive shots.

By halftime CNU had a 42-25 lead. The Maroons got within 15 points twice, but the Captains pulled way to a 25-point margin, 54-29, with 13:50 to play and were never challenged again.

Sophomore Alysa Kerr came off the bench to lead CNU for the second straight game, scoring a career-high 24 points. She scored 17 in the Captains' win Friday over Washington & Lee. Schweers scored 18 and had 11 rebounds, while Jessica Moore added 14. Barbara Davis contributed 13 rebounds as CNU out-rebounded the taller Maroons, 47-39.

The Captains are now 30-0 and headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the 1991-92 season.
