Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University softball squad improved to 24-6 Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep over Mary Baldwin College. The Captains won the opener, 14-0, and took the nightcap, 11-1. Both USA South Athletic Conference games at Captains Park went just five innings.
CNU took the opener by scoring five runs in both the second and fourth innings. Senior shortstop
Mary Kennedy went 3-for-3 and scored twice. Freshman starter
Tiffany Merrill allowed just one hit in three innings of work to pick up the win and improve to 2-0 on the season.
In the second game, the Captains erupted for nine runs in the second inning and never looked back. 10 different CNU Batters collected at least one hit as the Captains scored 11 runs on 11 hits. Senior first baseman
Kristen Nickloy smacked a solo home run, and senior
Kristen Rowe pitched in relief to pick up the victory, her 11th of the season.
Christopher Newport scored 25 runs on 24 hits in the twin bill. The Captains are now 6-2 in conference play.
Mary Baldwin falls to 2-25 overall and 0-10 in the USA South.
The Captains travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, this weekend. CNU plays a doubleheader at Peace College on Friday beginning at 2:30, and then will play two on Saturday at Meredith beginning at 12 noon.
