Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport swept a USA South softball doubleheader Saturday, beating Methodist by scores of 8-0 and 8-0. The Captains, ranked #5 in the nation, raised their record to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in the USA South with the wins at Captains Park. Both games went just five innings, as CNU pitchers allowed no runs on just five hits in the doubleheader.
CNU took the opener by scoring eight unearned runs in the first inning. The Captains capitalized on three first-
inning Monarch errors, and then cruised to the win behind the one-hit pitching of Kristen Rowe, who struck out eight and improved to 5-1 on the season. Ashley Mani and Emily Garcia each knocked in two runs for the Captains.
Emily Beck fell to 0-5 despite not allowing an earned run in the loss for Methodist.
In the nightcap, CNU's
Elizabeth Holte improved to 7-3 by scattering four hits and throwing five shutout innings. The Captains plated five runs in the fourth inning and ended the game with three more in the fifth.
Ashley Mani knocked in four more runs to give her six RBI's for the day.
MU starter Alex Bass allowed six runs on 10 hits to fall to 2-5 on the season. Methodist is now 5-15 overall and 2-2 in USA South play.
CNU hosts Lynchburg on Sunday at Captains Park. The non-conference doubleheader will begin at 1:30 pm.
