FAIRFAX, Va. - Christopher Newport's men's tennis team gained its third victory over a Division I team in five tries Saturday, defeating George Mason 5-2 at the Montclair club's indoor hard courts in Fairfax Station.
Gian Heyer and
Lorenzo Sison won in singles and doubles for the Captains (4-2), and No. 6 player
Dusty Nelson provided the clinching fourth point against one of Virginia's largest universities with a 6-0, 6-1 romp.
The Captains swept the doubles matches with victories by the teams of Nelson-
Eric Shulman, Heyer-Sison and
Robbie Wagner-Tom Whaling.
Sison, winning 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4, gave CNU its first singles triumph. At the third spot, Heyer outlasted
Patrick Mulquin 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), rallying from a 5-3 deficit in games in the third set, to give the Captains a degree of security against the Patriots.
No. 1 Shulman and No. 2
Garrett Widing each won the second set but lost in three.
Martin Brown, a former George Mason player who is in his second year competing for the Captains, won 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at the fifth spot.
CNU will play only Division III teams, many of them highly ranked, the rest of the way.
The Captains will play four matches in the Northeast over spring break, starting with a Saturday, Feb. 27, 4 p.m. matchup against The College of New Jersey in Ewing.
Coincidentally, the TCNJ courts are where the Captains made their only dual-team NCAA tournament appearance, defeating St. Joseph of Long Island, N.Y., before losing to Williams (Mass.) in 2008.
